If you know anything about video games, you will know Fortnite sparked an incredible gaming craze. As a game that spans multiple gaming platforms and age ranges, Fortnite became the number one Battle Royale game. The art style and gameplay are not the most realistic but the game is free and there are millions of players across the world. Fortnite allows you to eliminate dozens of players in a match to be the last standing.
Fortnite might look childish but the weapons are mostly based off of real world guns. In this article, we will cover the Assault Rifles of the Assault weapons in the current Fortnite lineup. There are a good number different automatic and semi-auto rifles in this lineup. The real version of the gun and some additional information regarding the gun will be covered for each weapon. For some weapons, it will be a rough estimation since they are not exact.

Assault Rifle (Low Tier)
M4A1
The real gun name of the low tier Assault Rifle is the is the M4A1. Everyone know this classic carbine version of the M16. Fortnite uses this as the most basic version of the Assault Rifle in-game because it is a very prevalent weapon used in the US armed forces still to this day.
Unlike the more modern versions of the M16, the M4A1 was designed to shoot semi-auto and fully-auto. As the M16 did, the M4A1 is also chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO with a 30 round magazine setting the standard for NATO STANAG assault rifles. Most 5.56mm guns in the game use Medium Ammo to signify a light/assault rifle.
Assault Rifle (High Tier)
FN SCAR-L (MK16)
The real gun name of the high tier Assault Rifle is the is the FN SCAR-L (MK16) or FN SCAR 16 (Civilian). The FN SCAR stands for the Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle. It was made by the Belgium firearms company Fabrique Nationale. USSOCOM issued a weapon competition to suit the all the unique needs of the special operations units. A requirement for the competition was for the platform to be chambered in both NATO calibers of 5.56x45mm and 7.62x51mm respectively. The FN SCAR platform won the competition.

They chose the SCAR to be the upgraded version of the Assault rifle because it was designed to replace the M4 in real life. The FN SCAR-L (MK 16) is the version chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO – the assault rifle variant. The FN SCAR-H (MK 17) is the version chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO – the battle rifle variant. The game uses the MK 16 assault rifle version.

Burst Assault Rifle (Low Tier)
FAMAS F1
The real gun name of the low tier Burst Assault Rifle is the FAMAS. The default version is the F1 variant. The FAMAS is the standard service rifle for the French. It is a bullpup assault rifle chambered once again for NATO standards – 5.56x45mm. The F1 version was issued with a standard 25 round straight magazine. The G2 upgraded version has a curved magazine that supports 30 rounds as most other NATO assault rifles do.
The iconic thing about the FAMAS is the very high fire rate. It has a fire rate of about 1000 rpm. Since the fire rate is so high in real life, Fortnite limits the fire mode to burst fire only for balance. In 2017, France announced that the FAMAS was being replaced by the HK 416 as the standard service rifle. Since the is also a 5.56mm chambered rifle, it uses Medium Ammo.
Burst Assault Rifle (High Tier)
Steyr AUG A3
The real gun name of the high tier Burst Assault Rifle is the Steyr AUG A3. The Steyr AUG is unofficially the world’s first successful bullpup assault rifle platform. The A3 version is the latest version that supports a modular rail for attachments as you see above. The original Steyr AUG was developed in the 1960s and put into service in the Austrian Army in the 1970s as the STG 77.
The Steyr AUG was built modularly to quickly be changed into a different firearm type. It is chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO like most other assault rifles. Fortnite has this gun using Medium Ammo because of this as well. The game also has additional zoom function due to the scope Fortnite put on the rail.

Heavy Assault Rifle (Low Tier)
AK-103
The real gun name of the low tier Heavy Assault Rifle is the is the AK-103. It is a more modern descendent of the AK or AK47. Variants of the AK47 are used all across the globe. Many poorer nations use this gun as their standard military rifle because it is cheap yet reliable. It is the world’s most popular and used assault rifle – period. No modern shooter is complete without an AK – this one or a variant of the AK.

AK stands for Avtomat Kalashnikova in Russian or Automatic Kalashnikov in English. The very first official version being produced in 1947, the AK47 and its variants have made waves ever since. Like the original AK, the AK-103 is chambered in the beefy 7.62x39mm Soviet with a standard 30 round magazine. This is a bigger round than the 5.56x45mm NATO that chambers most of the real assault rifles in Fortnite. This is why it is deemed the Heavy Assault Rifle.
Heavy Assault Rifle (High Tier)
CMMG MK47 Mutant
The real gun name of the high tier Heavy Assault Rifle is the is still the CMMG MK47. The CMMG MK47 is a pretty new rifle. You can consider this an Armalite Rifle (AR) style version of the AK-47. The CMMG MK47 is designed to shoot just like an AR-15 or M16 but fire a 7.62×39mm AK-47 round.
The CMMG MK47 was developed in 2014 and produced in 2015. I do believe that this is the reason Fortnite considers this gun as the high tier model due to the fact that it is a newer gun. In real life, this fires the same round as the low tier version – the AK-103.
Scoped Assault Rifle (Low Tier)
CZ 805 BREN A1
The real gun name of the low tier Scoped Rifle is the CZ 805 BREN A1. The CZ 805 BREN A1 was developed in the Czech Republic by Česká zbrojovka a.s. Uherský Brod (CZ). The A1 version of this gun is has a longer barrel which helps for longer ranges and the version used in Fortnite.
The CZ 805 BREN A1 is a modular assault rifle and has plenty of rails to support attachments on various sides of the firearm. This was a natural pick for using this as a ranged rifle since you can add a scope on top easily which is what Fortnite did. The CZ 805 BREN A1 is also chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO like most of the other assault rifles hence the reason it uses Medium Ammo.
Scoped Assault Rifle (High Tier)
HK G36
The real gun name of the high tier Scoped Assault Rifle is the HK G36. The HK G36 is a world-renown assault rifle made by Heckler & Koch from Germany. This version above and in Fortnite is one of the more modern versions of the G36 with a lower rail for attachments at the top of the rifle.
HK made the G36 based from their G3 which is based off the German WW2 gun – the STG44. HK has a long history with firearms and the G36 has a distinguished record as the main weapon for the German Army for decades. It also fires the 5.56x45mm which means it would use Medium Ammo in-game.
Thermal Scoped Assault Rifle
M4 SOPMOD (Block 2)
The real gun name of the Thermal Scoped Assault Rifle is the is the M4 SOPMOD. The SOPMOD is a highly configurable weapon modification kit for the various gun like the M4. SOPMOD means Special Operations Peculiar MODification and the M4 is probably the most famous for using this kit. The kit usually includes different rails and accessories like sights, scopes, handgrips, suppressors, flashlights, and lasers. There is no particular correct way to mod your gun with this kit and it up to the operator to use what is necessary depending on the mission.
It looks like Fortnite uses the Block 2 (Version 2) of the SOPMOD kit. You can see the similarities the model has with the picture above. The stock, scope, magazine assist, foregrip, and AN/PEQ laser from the SOPMOD are all included on the Thermal Scoped Assault Rifle with the front M4 sight still intact.
Tactical Assault Rifle
SIG MPX PCC – Taran Tactical Upgrade
The real gun name of the Tactical Assault Rifle is the SIG MPX PCC. The SIG MPX PCC is the Pistol Caliber Carbine (PCC) version of the SIG MPX which is a submachine gun. It is not an assault rifle by any means. The SIG MPX PCC is a new variant of the MPX line which increases the barrel size to a carbine size which many assault rifles including the M4A1 is classified as.
The Fortnite design model uses a variation made from Taran Tactical Innovations. This upgrade with custom logos and sights was featured in the movie John Wick 3. The SIG MPX PCC shoots a 9mm which is generally a pistol caliber. This is why it is designated a PCC. This is also why Fortnite has this use Light Ammo instead of Medium Ammo for this weapon.
Infantry Rifle (Low Tier)
M1 Garand
The real gun name of the Infantry Rifle is the M1 Garand. The M1 Garand is famously know for it’s service in WW2. It was the first standard issue semi-auto rifle for the US military. Probably the most famous aspect of of the M1 Garand is the “ping” sound after the ammo clip ejected once out of ammo.
The M1 Garand is chambered in the high powered .30-06 Springfield cartridge which supports an 8-round clip that goes into a internal magazine. Fortnite assigns Medium Ammo to this weapon even though the caliber of the M1 Garand is quite high.
Infantry Rifle (High Tier)
Troy M14 MCS SASS
The real gun name of the high tier Infantry Rifle is the Troy M14 MCS SASS. The base M14 is the successor of the M1 Garand. The Troy M14 MCS SASS is a chassis upgrade to the M14 which add a rail system to the M14 platform. The M14 is chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO in a 20 detachable magazine.
The Fortnite design doesn’t exactly match the Troy upgrade platform. It look like a combination of a classic M14 with the Troy platform interweaved.
Makeshift Rifle
Daewoo K1A
The real gun name of the Makeshift Rifle is the Daewoo K1A. This Korean made assault rifle entered Korean military service in 1981. In real life, the Koreans classified the K1 as a submachine gun and not an assault rifle. the “A” version is a slightly upgraded version of the original which all K1s were upgraded to.
The Makeshift Rifle isn’t exactly the Daewoo K1A but many of the design elements are very similar to the K1A. If you take away the unique qualities of the Makeshift Rifle, the Daewoo K1A design would be a lot more prevalent.
Primal Rifle
SIG SG 551
The real gun name of the Primal Rifle is the is the SIG SG 551. The SIG SG 551 is a part of the SIG SG 550 Series of rifles produced by SIG Sauer back in the 1990s. The SIG SG 551 is the mid tier sized rifle in the series. The SIG SG 552 is the short “Commando” sized rifle and the SIG SG 550 is the longest rifle in the series, respectively.
The SIG SG 551 is a fully-auto assault rifle chambered 5.56x45mm NATO like the most of the other assault rifles here as well. This is why this gun uses Medium Ammo in game. Note that the Primal Rifle doesn’t look exactly like the SIG SG 551, but you can see design elements from it including the ejection port, receiver, and front grip.
